Uterus lost in translation

A doctor at a hospital in Jönköping district has been criticised by the National Board of Health and Welfare for not having used a translator with a woman who had her uterus removed earlier this year.

The woman didn´t understand the consequences of the operation beforehand and was said to be devastated afterwards.

The doctor maintains that he told her that it could become necessary to remove the uterus during the operation of muscle tumours. He did not realise that she did not understand this, he says.

Both the doctor and the woman speak bad Swedish.

"This is probably why they didn´t understand each other," reported Swedish Radio Jönköping.
