Bosnian war criminal transferred to Swedish jail
The UN war crimes court in The Hague said on Friday that the Bosnian Serb politician convicted of crimes against humanity has been transferred to Sweden to serve his 10-year sentence.
"Miroslav Deronjic, 55, has been transferred to Sweden to serve the 10 years in prison to which the tribunal sentenced him," the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) said in a statement.
Deronjic is a former vice-president of Bosnian Serb wartime leader Radovan Karadzic's SDS party.
He pleaded guilty to ordering an attack on the Muslim village of Glogova near Bratunac in eastern Bosnia in 1992, and was sentenced to 10 years in prison by the ICTY in 2003. The appeals chamber of the ICTY confirmed the sentence in July.
"As a result of the attack, 64 Muslim civilians were killed, Bosnian Muslim homes, private property and the mosque were destroyed and a substantial part of Glogova was razed," the appeals chamber said at the time in rejecting his appeal.
The tribunal, based in The Hague, has transferred 18 convicted prisoners to jails in other European countries in line with agreements.
The most recent was Mlado Radic, a Bosnian Serb torturer at the infamous Omarska concentration camp, who was transferred to a French prison earlier this month.
