"AstraZeneca has full confidence in and will continue vigorously to defend and enforce its intellectual property rights protecting Seroquel," the group said in a statement to the London Stock Exchange.

AstraZeneca said it had filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey against Teva Pharmaceuticals USA and Teva Pharmaceuticals Industries.

Seroquel, used to treat schizophrenia, earned AstraZeneca two billion dollars in sales during 2004, a 33% rise on 2003.
