The climb was highest within the chemical and pharmaceutical industries as well as in the retail sector. The largest foreign owners at the end of 2004 were US and Dutch-owned companies.

Swedish direct investment abroad also increased in 2004 to 1,400 billion kronor. Again, the greatest rise in investment was in the chemical, pharmaceutical and retail sectors. Swedish companies hold more foreign assets in the USA and Finland than anywhere else.
