Most Swedes willing to donate organs

The vast majority of Swedes say they are positive towards the idea of donating their organs when they die. But only half have actually mentioned their wishes to anyone, according to figures from a Sifo poll released by Swedish Radio.

In practice that means that the responsibility for making a decision will fall to the relatives - and more often than not, relatives decide against a donation.

According to the survey, in which 1,000 people were questioned, 86% said they were in favour of donating their organs.

There have been 375 organ transplants in Sweden so far this year, compared to 583 last year. Over 60% of those are transplants of the kidneys. Today, over 600 Swedes are waiting for transplants.
