New government agency to safeguard Swedish language
Sweden's government is to establish a new coordinated agency for the development and safeguarding of the Swedish language.
The move was announced on Thursday by the Minister for Culture and Education, Leif Pagrotsky, as he presented the government's language proposal, The Best Language [Bästa språket].
"The new agency will, for example, support the use of language in state organisations through training staff to make their language clearer and better," said Pagrotsky to TT.
Currently the cultivation and care of the language is handled primarily by two public associations, The Swedish Language Council and the Sweden-Finnish Language Council, which are financed by government funding.
The idea is that by combining these with the snappily-named Institute for Dialectology, Onomastics and Folklore Research [Språk och folkminnesinstitutet], the government will create a more effective agency which has more power to guide language cultivation.
The organisation is likely to be set up in Uppsala and will begin operating on 1st July 2006.
