Seventeen polecats were stolen overnight from the Karolinska Institute (KI) in Solna. A number of research journals and vivisection licences were also taken.

"They came in through a wall, took the polecats and then wrote all over the walls," said Nicklas Mattsson of west Stockholm police.

Slogans such as "Stop animal testing" had been sprayed around the premises.

The polecats, according to KI, were being used in research into diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and Multiple Sclerosis.
