Men still earning more than women

The difference in salaries between men and women remains, according to equality-related supplements in this year's budget.

The divide can partly be explained by differences in work areas, types of job, experience and age. But when such factors are stripped out of the equation, women's salaries are still only up to 92% of those of men.

That is the same as last year and scarcely an improvement on seven years ago, when women on average earned 91% of men's earnings.

During 2004 almost two million (75%) and a full two million men (80%) were employed. The average number of hours worked per week was 33 for women and 39 fro men.

The income differences are biggest among parents of small children. Single mothers have the lowest economic standing.
