Police chief avoids drunk driving charges
When the Skåne police chief was arrested in his home two months ago he had a blood alcohol level of 2.5 parts per thousand. Outside stood his car, smashed up after collisions with four other cars.
But all along, the police officer denied that he had driven the car - and prosecutor Monica Mimer has now decided that she is unable to provide evidence to the contrary.
On Friday the drunk driving and hit and run cases against the policeman were dropped, according to the paper Sydsvenskan.
There were several witnesses to the dangerous journey which led the police to arrest one of their own bosses. The driver's size, hair colour and clothes matched the witnesses' reports.
But the observations were made from such a position that none of the witnesses had had a good view of the driver's facial features.
According to Mimer, the policeman maintains that the car was parked - with the keys in - on the driveway outside his house, and that someone must have stolen it and then driven it back.
The police did not carry out any technical examination of the vehicle. Monica Mimer said that she did not believe that it would have provided any useful new evidence.
