The 29-year old man stole the car from a newspaper delivery man at 6 am and drove it at high speed from Birger Jarlsgatan in the Östermalm district of the city to the palace courtyard. After driving slowly past the guards, he accelerated the car into a wall, Expressen reports a palace official as saying.

The man told police that he was hoping the princess would notice him.

“He wanted to meet Victoria,” said Kristina Berglund of Stockholm Police.

“He is convinced that they are a couple.”

The man was under the influence of drugs and was confused, Aftonbladet reports.

Ann-Christine Jernberg, spokeswoman for the royal family, said that the man was “sick and confused”

“It’s just very sad,” she said.

The royal family were at the palace at the time, but in a different part of the building, so the man failed to get the attention he wanted.

Police say the man is now receiving psychiatric treatment.
