Despite job losses and restructuring, TV 4 says it is committed to competing with SVT and commercial channels.

Tobias Bringholm, the new programme director for TV 4, has revealed what he plans to do with the 230 million crowns the channel is planning to save once 150 jobs disappear. Swedish drama and news are the two areas that will grow, but no further details were given.

Television viewers can expect more drama, something which the new television prize 'Kristallen' is designed to reward. But TV 4 was not included in the categories Drama Program of the Year and Facts/News Program of the Year. This is not good enough for a channel that promises a wide range of programs.

"TV 4 has to be represented in all categories. It is my job to ensure that we produce contemporary drama of the same quality as SVT or higher. Every autumn we will have a top quality drama series that reflects the current situation in the country," promises Bringholm, adding that it could be some time before he is able to present it.

The cost-saving measures will affect jobs on the current affairs section of TV 4, but Bringholm assured reporters that he will continue to invest in news.

"The news is our individual most important program and it is not hard to commercialize. We have to liberate our resources so that 'Nyheterna' grows," said Bringholm.

In the beginning of the 90s, TV 4 was known as the 'commercial public service channel', but lately it has taken on a profile more similar to TV 3 and Kanal 5. Bringholm says the strategy is to increase revenue by continuing to fight on both fronts.
