Wrong man snatched in rape revenge

A man who was kidnapped in Malmö early on Monday morning was probably the victim of a revenge attack, police have said. However, the three kidnappers – now in custody – apparently snatched the wrong victim.

Two of the three kidnapping suspects are related to an alleged rape victim according to Skånska Dagbladet.

Relatives of the rape victim contacted a woman from Malmö and two men from Gothenburg. The trio then rented a car, armed themselves with knives and sawed-off shotguns and went late Sunday night in search of the rapist.

At 2 a.m. outside an open restaurant, the suspects forced an 18-year old man they believed was the rapist into the car. Police were alerted and responded quickly.

During the pursuit the abducted man managed to throw himself free of the car at an intersection. Not long after police apprehended the kidnappers.

Police spokesman Lars Förstell told news agency TT on Tuesday, “Circumstances indicate that the abducted man wasn’t who they were out looking for.”

“I’ve never heard of anything like this before. It’s not about hardened criminals but everyday Swedes who chose to be vigilantes” Bo-Anders Jönsson from Malmö police told Skånska Dagbladet.

The trio is being held on counts of kidnapping, assault and possession of illegal weapons.
