An angry driver blew up a speed camera on the A31 motorway between the eastern towns of Metz and Nancy early on Sunday morning. Police are scanning the camera’s records in search of a culprit.

The amateur bomber planted a homemade device on the speed camera on a foggy Sunday morning to escape attention. Several local residents heard the explosion.

Police say the instructions to build the bomb could be easily found on the internet.

Police have launched an investigation and are examining the camera’s records to find suspects who may have been caught speeding over the past couple of weeks. The culprit risks up to three years in prison and a €45,000 fine.

The number of speed cameras on French roads is on the increase, and this is not the first time an angry driver has taken to destroying cameras.

In 2007 and 2008, a group known as the FNAR, the Anti Radar National Front, blew up several speed cameras in the Paris region. In 2008, the leader of the group was wounded by a bomb he was assembling at home.
