Two fishermen killed off south coast

Two Lithuanian fishermen were killed and one was injured after apparently being exposed to toxic fumes onboard a fishing boat off Sweden's southern coast, rescue services said on Wednesday.

"When we were called out yesterday, two lifeless bodies had been pulled up on deck and an injured man was in a cabin... They appear to have been cleaning out a fish storage area when they either ran out of oxygen or were exposed to poisonous fumes," Jörgen Persson, the deputy rescue service chief in the southern county of Blekinge, told AFP.

The Lithuanian-registered ship, which had six crew members in all, had unloaded its fish in the Karlskrona port and was heading back out to sea Tuesday evening when the accident was discovered and rescue services were called in.

"It's hard to say exactly how the accident happened... Fish can sometimes emit toxic fumes. Fishermen who work with this say that this is something you have to be careful of," Persson said.

The injured man was being treated at the Blekinge hospital and was reportedly in stable condition.
