Svennis declines palace invitation

Sven-Goran Eriksson, the Swedish coach of England's national football team, snubbed Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf on Thursday, declining to attend a ceremony where he was to receive a medal for his contribution to football, the palace said.

"He is unfortunately unable to attend today's ceremony," palace spokesman Morgan Gerle told AFP, declining to give further explanations.

Eriksson has been awarded the "H.M. the King's Medal", which is presented to Swedish and foreign citizens "for special merit and to officials of the Royal Court for long and faithful service".

Eriksson will receive the medal at a later date to be decided, Gerle said. A spokesman for Eriksson's employers, the English Football Association, said the Swede was currently on holiday.

"This is all a complete fuss over nothing," the spokesman said.

"When Sven received the invitation he was already committed to other things and the ceremony has been rearranged for a later date."
