Support for government at new low

Swedish voter support for the Social Democratic government of Prime Minister Göran Persson is at a low, an opinion poll published on Saturday showed, some 15 months ahead of the country's general election.

The Temo poll for the Dagens Nyheter, showed that 43 percent of 2,825 voters questioned believed the government was doing a bad job, with 15 percent saying it was working well.

Some 34 percent said the right-wing opposition would do a better job in government, while 22 percent said it would be worse.

This is the biggest support gap between government and opposition since Temo began polling voters with this set of questions last year.

Doubts about Persson's performance were clearly emerging among supporters of his own party, the Social Democrats, with 40 percent of them refusing to say whether the government's record was positive or negative.

The poll was conducted between April 6 and May 25 among people between 18 and 75.
