Continental starts flights to New York

American carrier Continental Airlines inaugurated its service from Stockholm to New York’s Newark airport on Thursday, thereby becoming the third airline to connect Sweden to the Big Apple.

The airline will fly once a day between the two cities using Boeing 757s, competing for passengers with SAS and Malaysia Airlines, which already fly the route.

New York has been proving a popular destination for Swedes: 60,000 people have flown between Stockholm Arlanda airport and New York this year, which is a 74 percent increase on 2004.

"The Stockholm service is another example of how the strength of Continental's New York/Newark hub is enabling us to give our customers nonstop access to new destinations across the world," said Jim Summerford, Continental's vice president of Europe, Middle East and India.

The increased competition on the route is making flights to New York cheaper for Swedes, according to a spokesman for Arlanda Airport:

“A trip to New York is not only good for the soul, but for the wallet too,” said Niclas Härenstam, press relations manager for LFV, owners of the airport.
