The robber struck on Thursday morning at the small police station in central Sweden, which is usually staffed by one officer. At the time of the attack the officer was out on duty, and the receptionist was the only person at the station.

The man knocked on the staff entrance of the station, and the receptionist opened the door, thinking that it was the policeman returning from his rounds.

The robber hit the woman, knocking her to the ground, before making off with the petty cash kept in the station, which according to the police contains money paid by people applying for passports.

"The money was not locked away," police spokeswoman Anna Rosenberg told Dagens Nyheter. "We don't know how much money was in the box, but it can't have been very much."

Police say they have sent dog patrols out to search for the attacker, but so far without result.

The receptionist was taken to hospital suffering from minor injuries. She has so far been too shocked to be able to give police a description of her attacker.
