Technical fault behind train fire - police

A fire which broke out on a Stockholm subway train during morning rush-hour traffic on Monday was caused by a technical problem, police said, ruling out foul play.

"Technicians looked at the train and concluded that the fire was caused by an electrical problem," Stockholm police spokesman Bjoern Pihlblad told AFP.

The investigation into possible arson has been abandoned, he added. Rinkeby station was evacuated after the fire broke out in a metro car and 11 people were taken to hospital with breathing problems. One of them was reported to be in serious condition.

Some passengers said that they heard detonations just before the train pulled into the station, Christer Persson of Stockholm police had said earlier.AFP
