Persson to stay on for election

Göran Persson has said that he will stay in his post to fight the 2006 general election. Sweden’s prime minister surprised commentators and his party colleagues on Tuesday when he said in a press interview that he was considering standing down this autumn.

Speaking on a call-in show on local radio in Värmland, Persson backtracked on his earlier statement, saying that he had just been thinking aloud.

He explained he often has to sit through “long and boring” interviews, and that sometimes he relaxes, and starts thinking and arguing.

“But maybe one should sometimes be more careful, especially when one’s talking about the type of questions we were discussing yesterday,” he said.
