“I don’t want to go into details, but we’re talking about extremely sensitive state secrets,” says chief prosecutor Marianne Aldén to TV4 Skaraborg. “The defense department is conducting an internal investigation into how much harm was caused,” she added.

The new allegations came to light as investigators looked into the charges of spousal abuse. The man is said to have abused and raped his wife for nearly a decade. The man was relieved of his military duties before he was arrested in March.

“Even if the crime itself is not grave, we consider it a serious offense in the context that he did not handle material correctly,” says police spokesman Lars Johansson.

Prosecutor Aldén says an indictment could be brought next week, not only for the abuse charges but also for mishandling state secrets.

The man, who denies committing any crime, could face up to six months in jail for spousal abuse, but if convicted of the other charges, faces a more severe punishment.
