SAS to slash "hundreds of jobs"

The Scandinavian Airlines group (SAS) is again in financial trouble with hundreds of jobs on the line in Sweden and Norway.

After delivering a bleak financial report the struggling airline is seeking ways to cut costs. According to Norwegian daily Aftenposten, one concrete project is to carry out medium and heavy maintenance at two bases instead of three - Stockholm, Sola (Stavanger) and Oslo's Gardemoen.

"One of the three will be phased out," claims Norwegian engineering representative Olav Lie.

This latest move is likely to see Norway and Sweden fighting to maintain their position with over 300 employees at each base.

As recently as 2003 SAS technicians in Norway and Sweden competed for the right to host the company's main technical maintenance facility. The company ended up basing it at Arlanda Airport in Stockholm.
