Emelie Öhrstig took the gold medal in Sprint at the World Nordic Ski Championships in Oberstdorf on Tuesday. Her victory was the cream in the semlor* for the Swedish team, which also saw Thobias Fredriksson take bronze in the men's sprint final.

In front of an estimated 16,000 spectators, Öhrstig powered to victory in 2 minutes 15.5 seconds on one of the toughest 900 metre courses the competition has witnessed in years.

The omens looked good when Öhrstig finished fastest in the morning's qualifying rounds. The 26 year old former cyclist from Borås then went on to crush the rest of the field in an impressive gold-medal performance.

For Swedish ski fans who travel all over Europe to cheer their team on, the trip to Oberstdorf was well worth the kronor. Team Sweden's Öhrstig, Lina Andersson and Anna Dahlberg took three of the four "A" final spots. It was almost a clean sweep but Canadian Sara Renner made a sensational comeback after the three Swedes' electrifying start to snatch third place on the line from Dahlberg.

Naturally, the Swedish press enjoyed Öhrstig's victory all the more as Norway's hope, and former world champion, Marit Bjørgen, had earlier been reduced to tears as she was knocked out in the qualifying stages.

There were no wild celebrations afterwards for Öhrstig, though. According to DN, the Swede celebrated with semlor* at the team's hotel.
