Phone companies to pay for police phone tapping

Sydsvenskan reported on Monday that telecom service providers will be responsible for footing the bill for any calls related to criminal investigations.
Thomas Östros, Secretary of Trade and Industry, said that calls that have to be monitored by the police should not cost anything. To start with this will accumulate an extra cost of up to 20 million kronor per year for all the service providers.
"There's been a suggestion from EU that telecommunication providers should be responsible for storing data", said Jan Stålhandske, Councillor at the Trade and Industry department.
"Data" could be e-mails, short text messages, mobile phone calls and website information or other "intellectual property". The regulations, designed to "free up a bit of the capital spent by the police force", is said to come into force on 1st July 2005, according to DN.
