Over the last 26 years almost a million army recruits have been given a series of logic and general intelligence tests covering verbal geometric, mechanical and mathematical abillity. During that time almost 3,000 men committed suicide and according to the researchers, those who scored badly at the intelligence tests are more likely to take their own lives.

It is believed that "those with less intelligence may be less able to deal with their problems", according to the institute reports.

Year of birth was also taken in to account, as was each person's type of background, such as "blue collar, white collar or self employed and other", said the institute.
