"Free year" scheme to cost 1.7 billion crowns

As of the start of this year it is possible to take between three and twelve months off work on pay corresponding to 85 per cent of unemployment benefit. Over 27,000 people have applied to take time off and the Labour Market Board (AMS) estimates the direct costs associated with the scheme will be in the region of 1.7 billion crowns.

When asked if it was a good reform, head of AMS Anders L Johansson said he prefers a wait-and-see approach.

"Our task is to see that it is a good reform from our labour market policy perspective," he comments.

SvD reports that around 700 long-term unemployed have got work as a result of the scheme.
