A Swedish man who was released from prison New Year's Day after serving his 16th sentence for abusing his partner went straight home and beat her again.

Aftonbladet reported on Monday that the prosecutor, Mikael Hammarstrand, said he'd never met a woman that has been "that vulnerable" before.

The man has lived with the woman for seventeen years and he was charged with bodily harm and abuse in the early 90's. In 1999 he was charged with raping the same woman.

"There is a serious risk that he will kill her," said Hammarstrand.

The man is now back behind bars.
