Volvo and Ericsson contribute plane
According to Friday´s Dagens Nyheter, Volvo and Ericsson have contributed a plane to help bring wounded Swedes in Thailand home. When the two Swedish companies heard that the Swedish government was having problems finding transport planes they contacted the foreign office and offered their help.
Pia Gideon, head of information at Ericsson, said "there was no question about it. This is a big catastrophy and Ericsson is represented in all of the affected countries". Ericsson also has staff, for example with technical skills or translators, already helping out in the affected countries.
On Thursday evening the Volvo-Ericsson plane, with capacity for 15 wounded passengers, took off from Säve airport after having been reconstructed to handle stretchers. A team of doctors and nurses was on board. After bringing the first wounded Swedes home it will go back and forth as many times as necessary according to Mårten Wikforss, head of press at AB Volvo.
Volvo, like Ericsson and many other companies, is also already helping out in the affected area with lorries and machines necessary for the clearing up work. The company has donated 1 million crowns to the Red Cross.
The drug company Pfizer is donating drugs and nursing requisites to a value of 25 million dollars and on Thursday the Swedish Bar Association urged their members to give free legal aid to people affected by the catastrophy. According to Anne Ramberg, general secretary of the Bar Association, "there is a lot that lawyers can do to help".
