Sources from Upsala Nya Tidning said a study presented at a medical summit in Gothenburg showed that at least four out of ten cyclists who suffer head injuries were drunk when the accident happened.

"Despite having worked in A&E and having seen many patients with head injuries I was surprised to learn of the high number of people that are under the influence of alcohol when involved in an accident," said Per-Olof Bylund, researcher at the centre for accident and emergency at the school of medicine in Umeå.

The research into head injuries were carried out on 500 men and women over the age of 15, who had been treated at Umeå hospital A&E. Five of them suffered fatal injuries and died, according to SVD.
