Sandal-wearing Danish hikers rescued on Corsican mountain

A group of twelve sandal-wearing Danish tourists found themselves ill-prepared for a mountain expedition when they were trapped in freezing temperatures.

The incident happened on the Monte Cinto mountain range in Corsica. The Danes, ranging in age from 7 to 77, had taken the popular but difficult GR20 trail across the mountains. They were fooled by sunny weather that then turned to rain, causing the mountain to become cold and slippery.

"The twelve people, who were not well-equippred, found themselves on rocks where they couldn't go forwards or backwards," said an officer from the mountain rescue team.

The stranded holiday-makers were airlifted to safety "in difficult conditions because of the atrocious weather," according to the officer, quoted by the France Soir newspaper.

Six members of the group required further medical attention for mild hypothermia after their ordeal.
