Illegal taxi drivers make a collective profit of at least 4 billion crowns a year, according to a report by DN on Thursday.

The government has decided to bring in new rules in order to clamp down on the business to prevent loss of income in the legal market.

"The police has more or less abandoned their efforts to try to charge drivers who aren't driving legally because it's so difficult to prove it", said government administrator and investigator Anders Engdahl.

He criticised, amongst others, local councils, saying that they aren't screening people enough and aren't checking if drivers are receiving benefits or claiming sickness pay whilst working.
