The wife of a French politician has admitted she planned to kill her husband but lost her nerve at the last minute.

The bizarre incident, which took place in June, centres around Christian Honoré, a councillor with the right-wing UMP party in the Valenton area just outside Paris.

Newspaper Libération reports that as he returned home late to his luxurious home he sensed that someone was in the garden. Following an earlier attack in 2009, when he was mugged and his car was burnt, he didn't want to take any chances so called the police. As he did, he noticed a dark silhouette moving around the bushes.

Unknown to him, the silhouette was his wife, Laurence, dressed in a catwoman outfit with latex gloves and a motorcycle helmet. The police arrived and, after a brief game of hide-and-seek in the garden, discovered her with a loaded rifle.

44-year old Laurence has confessed to police that she wanted to kill her husband but that she weakened at the last moment and "did not want to kill the father of her children".

In a further twist, it is alleged that the wife had two possible accomplices. She claims to have seduced the bodyguard of a senior UMP politician and asked him to help her carry out the murder. He then recruited a former police officer friend to help. Both have been taken into custody to answer charges of conspiracy to murder.

The family has a complicated history. On the one hand, Laurence had written a blog called "my crazy family", detailing the exploits of a family "unlike any other, although we're trying to become more normal". On the other, she complained of domestic abuse and started using internet dating sites to find a lover.

The couple had been estranged for some time and had started divorce proceedings. A friend told Le Parisien that they were "an explosive pair".
