Stockholm cars to run on food waste

Rubbish thrown out by thousands of households in the Stockholm region will be turned in to biological gas that can be used for vehicles, reported DN on Tuesday.
Some areas will start to convert food waste into gas on a trial period next year. Household rubbish in Stockholm has been burnt, rather than buried, for many years, while any excess rubbish that hasn't already been divided for recycling is being used as district heating.
"The rubbish generated from the Stockholm region, alone, amounts to at least 220,000 tonnes of waste every year", reported DN.
But the Swedes have been good recyclers for generations, it seems. As far back as 1909 food waste was burned for electricity in Stockholm's Lövsta region.
