Snus exports "break EU laws"

Swedish Match has been accused of breaking EU laws by sending snus through the post to other EU countries - despite regulations banning export.

According to Friday's Göteborgs-Posten people can have order forms and price lists sent to them and order what they like. And GP confirmed that when they contacted Swedish Match by telephone "there wasn't a problem with placing an order".

"Postal ordering makes up a tiny part of the sales - we regard this as being a Swedish market," said Miakeal Arnebert at Swedish Match. "But many Swedes commute abroad with their work so they often want a bit of snus to take with them."

GP pointed out that taking snus abroad is regarded as a form of smuggling. Anyone caught carrying goods from Sweden to a country where those goods are illegal could face a prison sentence of up to six years.
